Doreen Dixson Gamell, soprano, cantor, poet and actress, has devoted her vocal and interpretive talents to classical, popular and liturgical music throughout her career. As a recitalist who has appeared at New York’s Merkin Hall and Lincoln Center Library, as well as at venues throughout the New York Metropolitan area and on Long Island, Doreen is known for championing art song as well as lesser known modern composers such as Charles Coleman (from whom she commissioned his first art song works), Lee Hoiby, Ben Haim, Hindemith and local composers on Long Island.
Classically trained at Boston University’s famed opera conservatory and by noted opera coaches and teachers including Herbert Mayer and Franco Iglesias, she delights in devoting her sizeable range and vocal powers to “crossing over” with her audiences, bringing classical music devotees new interpretations of popular and broadway music, and bringing popular music audiences into contact with classical and liturgical work. After serving as a Cantor at several Long Island synagogues, as well as a member and frequent soloist with the Long Island Cantors Ensemble, Doreen is once again singing a broad range of music and song in a series of recitals starting in 2007.
